driving through new zealand is like traveling from california to colorado to alaska to hawaii and onto to maine... in the course of an afternoon drive. its an amazingly diverse and beautiful country that remains rugged and wild. picture california with all its best parts - the sierras, big sur, humbolt redwood state park, santa barbara - and then take away about 35 million people and all the invasive development that has occurred in the last 150 years.
its the 3/4th the size of california but only has about 4 million people.
here's a few pics from our route so far... starting on the south island in christchurch, traveling north along the east coast, across the north coast, and halfway down the west coast before shooting across the country's southern alps back to christchurch and heading south along the east coast. whew... that was 2.5 weeks worth.
here's a map to make sense of it all.
on the way north from christchurch
the coast just south of blenheim
wine country
in the marlborough region
abel tasman coast
punakaki coastal area north of greymouth
traveling inland from greymouth to arthur's pass
right outside christchurch
coast south of omaru
north of dunedin
otago peninsula
